¡Bienvenidos! Bienvenue! Willkommen!
Welcome to the World Language Department’s webpage. Mason High School offers classes in Spanish, French and German beginning in 8th grade at the middle school and continuing until 12th grade at the high school. Students who take the first year of a world language class in 8th grade earn one credit towards high school graduation. Students may start taking a language at any point, but are strongly encouraged to take their language courses in consecutive years.
Beginning with the graduating class of 2016, two years of study of a world language is a high school graduation requirement in the state of Michigan. Students must study two years of the same language. Our district recommends that students who are taking a language only because it is a requirement, and who would not have taken it otherwise, should wait until their sophomore year to begin their world language class. This way, academic studies will be spread out more evenly for incoming freshmen to our high school.
The World Language Department has consistent policies across the three languages:
HOMEWORK: In general, students can expect to have homework on a daily basis.
TESTS AND PROJECTS: Students will be graded on their skills in reading, writing, speaking and hearing the target language.
GRADING: In all world language classes, 75% to 80% of the course grade is based on test scores (this includes any graded assignment such as quizzes, speaking and writing projects, etc.). The remainder of the course grade (20% to 25%) is based on daily work which is comprised of homework and participation in class. World Language students are expected to demonstrate proficiency on a final exam which is worth 20% of the overall trimester grade.
RE-MAKES: Students are permitted to remake two assessments per trimester.
